Why you shouldn’t be buying Banana Republic’s “gold” jewelry

May 11, 2010

So when Banana Republic revamped its jewelry and even launched Edition here in San Francisco (if you’re unfamiliar it is an entire accessory boutique for BR), we were kind of in love. We even declared it here.

Therefore imagine our disappointment when the few gold pieces we got at totally reasonable and sometimes even shockingly good prices, we’re not even able to wear our “gold” ring or cuff anymore. Lame, right? Well we guess we should have known better after a saleswoman once told us a popular ring design was selling our left and right, but that it was gold plated and would definitely make our finger green.

So bottom line? Feel free to grab up all the great silver and beaded jewelry you want. Items like this bracelet though? Better off not spending the dollars (while not many) as you won’t get more than a few months out of it.

Has anyone else had this experience??

what do you expect? banana republic is a fashion apparel company that also happens to sell FASHION jewelry. br is not asking you to pay an exorbitant amount of money so in turn, you cannot expect high quality. sure, it’s annoying that the plating wears & may turn your finger green, but this happens with any fashion jeweler – be it br, macy’s, j. crew, or forever 21. if you are looking for high quality gold jewelry, go to a well known jewelry store. low prices & top qality, you can’t have your cake & eat it too.

i totally see your point, but just haven’t had the same experience with j.crew. i mean, forever 21, sure because you pay a few bucks, but if it’s over $20 and a retailer like BR that prides itself on quality and affordable trends, i think they should at least have a life of more than 6 months. but that’s just my opinion!

Had the exact same experience, except it took all of a few weeks, rather than 6 months. Never had that happen with J.Crew or even the Limited or Express! Ridiculous.

I was really disappointed with BR “gold” jewelry. Paid regular price for two necklaces and wore them only a few times each, and boom, they are turning greenish on the underside. No jewelry from BR again.
