Storm King Art Center I wit & whimsy

If you’re a longtime reader you know that I have a running New York Bucket List. It was started upon my arrival to the city over six years ago and despite the years I’ve lived here, the list only manages to grow longer!

Storm King Art Center has been on my list for a long time but finding a day for the 90 minute journey out of Manhattan up to the expansive open air museum proved difficult. But this summer I finally picked a day, booked a rental car through Enterprise CarShare and hit the road with Bekka.  We got on the road around 9AM just in time to miss most of the traffic heading out of the city and we hit the open road in New Jersey for the beautiful ride up to Storm King.

In case you’re unfamiliar (and perhaps didn’t watch the stunning part of the second season of Master of None in which they visited the center), Storm King is one of the world’s leading sculpture parks. It is set across 500 acres of expansive lawns, hills and woodlands and has more than 100 sculptures. It’s strikingly designed and beautiful at every turn.

We lucked out with a sunny day and highly recommend visiting on a weekday if possible as seeing the art without loads of people around is ideal. When our sun had seen a few too many rays and we were filled with thirst and hunger, we headed to the small cafe serving sandwiches and cold drinks to refuel before visiting the rest of the park.

You may recall last year’s adventure with Enterprise CarShare and this year’s was just as successful. (I also used my membership to go upstate in the Fall!) With my driver ID card in hand and the handy CarShare app, the entire experience of booking a vehicle, picking it up and returning it was a breeze. Fuel is included in the price of the rental, the cars are in great shape and at the end of the day you don’t have to worry about parking, insurance or any of the other hassles that come with owning a car. It is so ideal for city dwellers like me and I’m already looking forward to planning another day trip soon. Those city escapes are good for the soul, you know?

By the way, Enterprise CarShare is currently running a promotion where you can get your first year’s membership fee waived + $20 in driving credits! What better reason to plan a city escape?
