New Habits for the New Year

January 8, 2018

wit & whimsy

In the past two years I’ve made major strides in forming good habits. I take my vitamins daily, I workout regularly and I take good care of my skin morning and night. With the start of the new year, I wanted to share some additional habits I plan to hone in on and ensure that they do, in fact, become habits in the weeks to come. Hope you enjoy reading about those that I’m prioritizing in 2018! (And in case you missed my larger 2018 goals last week, here they are!)

Morning Meditation

With a busy Fall and an even busier holiday season I completely fell out of my meditation habit. Whenever I make the time to meditate I do find it very calming and centering and there’s no time like the beginning of a new year to get back to a daily practice. In order to ensure it happens I’m going to attempt to do it within the first hour I am awake. (I use the Inscape app & also visit their NYC studio.)

Take daily breaks

Some days I am so busy that by the time I look at the clock it is mid-afternoon and I’ve been chained to my computer all day and haven’t eaten lunch or taken a single break. For my mental health I really need to change this in 2018. Even if it is just going out to run an errand or to have a cup of tea – I need to work breaks into my day. I’m going to start by making an effort to go on short walks and also begin putting away my computer while I eat lunch.

Self Care Sundays

I’ve done this somewhat unofficially ever since moving into a place of my own but this year I want to make it a regular habit whenever I’m home. Before I became self-employed, Sundays used to be the day when I did most of my work for wit & whimsy. Nowadays, thanks to my more flexible schedule, I can actually make this day one of rest. One of my favorite ways to wind down? A little self-care in the form of skincare! If you follow me on Instagram you know I often share the products I’m using on my Stories, and last week one I began incorporating was the dr. brandt skincare hydro biotic recovery mask. It was exactly what my skin needed after time in Colorado and returning to the bitter cold of New York. This mask goes on as a last step in your skincare routine and you leave it on over night so it really gets time to go to work. It has the nicest lightweight texture (gel-like), goes on really smoothly and doesn’t have any overpowering scent. It works by locking in moisture but also reduces redness and rids your skin of any signs of irritation (which often happen when skin is dry.) After applying it, the rough patches on my cheeks and chin from the cold weather were smoother and less irritated in the morning. This mask harnesses the power of probiotics (which you guys know I’m a huge fan of) and it also features a mix of green tea, white tea, grape seed extract and honey which work together to promote healing and soothe skin. Skin feels more supple upon waking up (ensuring makeup goes on even easier) and you’re not forced to slather on loads of moisturizer. Win/win.

Prioritize Inspiration

Something I found myself really lacking last year was inspiration. For shoots. For post ideas. You name it. (Remember this post!?) So this year I want to make a habit of taking time every week to find inspiration. This could be done by spending time browsing Pinterest, reading magazines, taking a trip or by finally building an inspiration board.

Naps

I know some people aren’t nap people or some people see them as a weakness but honestly given I often work late into the night and work without breaks as previously mentioned, I’m going to allow myself naps when needed. 20 minutes can sometimes be all I need to power back up and feel rejuvenated to finish out the day. (My keys to a good nap include being sure to set an alarm, pop on an eye mask & some earplugs to ensure you make the most of the time you’re setting aside!)

Make the Bed Every Morning.

This is a habit I really improved upon after moving into my studio but it still slips by on some days. This year I want to make my bed every single morning. (And after the aforementioned naps I plan to sneak in on certain occasions ;)).

Are you tackling any habits this year?! I’d love to hear them!

p.s. another dr.brandt mask I love and my holy grail beauty products.

Thanks to dr. brandt skincare for partnering on this post.

I love the idea of self care Sundays! I’ve kind of done them previously by doing my nails, a face mask, etc. and I definitely think I’ll do them more often 🙂
