laser cut midi and chambray (+ an alex and ani giveaway)

wit & whimsy I laser cut midi + lace up sandals

Another day…another midi skirt (last one seen here.) I’m seriously in love with this silhouette and while typically I prefer it with heels, I took these photos while still on my flats-routine due to last week’s half marathon! I adore the volume and texture in this skirt and it reminds me of playing dress up with my sister Shannon when we were little. We were mildly obsessed with the movie Hello Dolly and would dress up as the shop girls by piling on every skirt we owned in the “dress up box.” The bathroom served as our hat shop and our younger brothers were forced to play along (sorry, Sean! sorry, Kevin!) A few other midis that I like if you want to try this shape out can be spotted here, here and here (all under $100.)

Alex and Ani Bracelet Giveaway

Now to the exciting news…with a giveaway! I was first introduced to Alex and Ani on a trip to Nantucket nearly four years ago. I was there for work (talk about a dream work trip!) and had some free time so I wandered around and happened upon a pop up of Alex and Ani in a little market. I bought a necklace and continued to go to the brand for affordable and fun jewelry many years later. (I’ve since visited their stores in both New York City and Boston.) Their most iconic pieces are their charm bracelets which stack easily and make great gifts so I’m excited to be partnering with Alex and Ani today for the latest giveaway to celebrate this blog’s new look!

The winner of the giveaway (see entering details below!) will get their own stack of 6 Alex and Ani bracelets (worth a retail value of $160-170!) including a personalized initial bracelet (my favorite.)

And a word about these sandals – how cool are they? They are largely sold out at most retailers but still available here if you want them. They may be a pain to put on (read: don’t even think about wearing them to an airport!) but I love the look of them and they filled a serious hole in my shoe wardrobe given I had no gladiator styles. Not to mention they are comfortable and will go so well with denim shorts this summer. (Other options that are slightly less expensive can be found here, here and here.)

Some real talk today…for years I have struggled to dress my body. Not only because weight fluctuations brought on by a variety of health issues (namely thyroid disease), but because I have a very large chest. I have hated it since high school. We girls always want what we weren’t born with, right? Thicker hair, straighter hair, a smaller waist, bigger boobs. Well for me, I spend most days wishing God had blessed me with a B or C cup.

Teeny bikinis and low cut tops or most crop tops are not in my cards. Nor are the always cute fit + flare dresses. Often people are actually surprised when they hear I am a DD. I dress to hide my chest, vs. show it off. To each their own of course, but my chest has always made me feel self-conscience. When I bought this top, I knew there was a good chance it wouldn’t work. After much debate with my roommate Bridget, we decided the pattern actually created an optical illusion up top vs. calling attention to my chest. I ended up keeping the piece and am glad I did so.

In college BCBGMAXAZRIA was one of my favorite brands. I’d get a special occasion dress for a sorority event once a year (and a few still hang in my closet because of the memories they hold) but it had been years since I bought anything from the line. They have so many pretty pieces right now though in their New Arrivals and loads on sale (and p.s. if you’re a new customer, sign up for their newsletter and get 15% off.)

Anyhow, I know every girl has some sort of body issues on the regular but why is it so hard to talk about? Honestly, it has been a struggle for me to get used to my size and finding what works for me. You want to wear every trend, buy certain pieces you love but what I’ve learned is that if something doesn’t make you feel good, it’s not worth having. Instead of chasing what everybody else has, you always win when you learn to dress for yourself and not others.

And speaking of bodies…mine seriously impressed me this weekend when I was able to run my half marathon in full! Given my struggle with training, I went into it saying I’d give it a shot and if I couldn’t finish…I couldn’t finish. But I was able to pull through and do the 13.1 and I feel so accomplished. I’ll be sharing the lessons I learned from the experience later this week.

That’s it for today – it’s another week and I’m starting this one off ready to kill it! Hope you take that attitude on, too #letsdothis!

introducing the new wit & whimsy (& a giveaway!)

Meghan Donovan I Eyelet Dress I wit & whimsy

You guys, today is the day! I am so excited to reveal the brand new wit & whimsy!

This has been quite the undertaking and frankly on my radar for quite some time so I’ve been making notes of what I wanted to improve, listening to what you had to say and working hard to give this blog the major overhaul it was due.

So, what’s new you ask? I am bursting at the seams to tell you!

  • The look (obviously): My goal for the new site was to streamline. My previous site design had started to give me the heebie-jeebies with its look. I was working so hard on getting regular content up it was like I had developed wrinkles and never addressed them! I am so glad that I finally took the leap and spent the time to craft the vision I wanted. I hope you enjoy the sleek and simplified new look and enjoy the overall functionality that has been designed to give you a better experience when visiting. It’s not overly stylized or editorial – I wanted it clean + simple.
  • Logo / Branding: Since I started my blog back in late 2005, it’s always been “WIT & Whimsy” because I started it back in college and I had an inside joke with my girlfriends related to “WIT”. It’s a minor change to move to “wit & whimsy,” but an important one for me. I am in love with my new logo though and overall branding of the site that is far more true to my aesthetic and I think represents my personality in a very visual, authentic way.
  • A new Tumblr: I have created “a little extra wit & whimsy” to curate pieces I am currently loving and anything else that strikes my fancy. Follow along, won’t you!?
  • A New York City Guide: I’ve had this drafted for years but finally put the finishing touches on it. Visiting New York? Check it out to add my favorites to your list. Just moved here? My list will help you curate some of the best food/experiences this amazing city has to offer. See it here!
  • An FAQ: I get loads of questions on social and email and many of them can now be answered all in one handy space.
  • Commenting: I hope you find it easier to do with the new post design!
  • A new Navigation Bar: At the top of the site you can now easily find the page you’re looking for – whether it’s a bit more about me, my new FAQ, my city guide or a particular content category. Which brings me to…
  • Simplified Categories: In addition to streamlining the look, I’m streamlining my content. With the ‘Categories’ button on the navigation bar, you can now easily go to Outfits, Lifestyle, Travel or Beauty.
  • Shopping Boutiques: I’ve curated shopping picks in a variety of categories so when you toggle over SHOP in the navigation bar, feel free to peruse my updated shops: My Favorites, Under $100, Currently Coveting, Classic Pieces and Beauty Favorites. I’ll be keeping this refreshed on a weekly basis.
  • Mobile Compatibility:  With the face lift, you can now browse wit & whimsy from your iPad or mobile phone and have the same experience!
  • Daily Reads: Want to know what blogs I always check? They are my most favorite and you can see them all here.

Meghan Donovan I wit & whimsy I eyelet dressI want to extend a huge thank you to Whitney of Heart & Arrow who designed and developed this face lift with me. She was so wonderful in helping my vision come to life and I couldn’t be more grateful. I do have some minor maintenance items to make happen still so there’s additional work going on behind the scenes but I hope you love what you’re currently seeing.

I also want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you who read wit & whimsy, are in touch on social, maybe are a new reader, a regular reader, have left a comment once or dozens of times…you make this blog so worthwhile for me. When I look back on the past (almost) nine years, I am in awe of what this little site has brought into my life and my readers mean absolutely everything to me. I cannot wait for the next chapter that this redesign ushers in and I can’t say enough how forever touched I am that you choose to support wit & whimsy and follow along on this journey with me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
